اندهشت إليزابيث من كياسته، حيث اعتقدت أنها أهانته، غير أن امتزاج العذوبة بالذكاء في أسلوبها جعلها أبعد ما يكون عن إهانة أي شخص لم ينجذب السيد دارسي لأي امرأة بحياته قدر انجذابه تجاه إليزابيث، وهو يعتقد أنه لولا تدنى مكانتها الاجتماعية، لأصبح عرضة للوقوع في حبها.
ولقد رأت الآنسة بنجلي، أو اعتقدت أنها رأت، ما يكفي لإثارة غيرتها، وازدادت لهفتها لشفاء صديقها العزيزة جين ورغبتها في التخلص من إليزابيث.
ووفقاً لاتفاق بين الأختين، كتبت إليزابيث إلى أمها في الصباح التالي تطلب منها إرسال العربة لهما خلال ذلك اليوم. فأرسلت إليهما السيدة بينيت تخبرهما بعدم إمكانها إرسال العربة إليهما قبل يوم الثلاثاء. ولكن إليزابيث قررت عدم البقاء لأكثر من ذلك، كما لم تكن تتوقع أن هناك ما سيشجعها على البقاء. فحثت جين على استعارة عربة السيد بنجلي في الحال.
سمع سيد المنزل في أسف شديد بقرب رحيل الأختين، وحاول مراراً إقناع الابنة الكبرى للسيد بينيت بأن رحيلها قد يكون فيه خطر عليها، ولكن جين كانت قادرة دائما على أن تكون حاسمة حين تدرك أنها على حق.

As a result of an agreement between the two sisters, Elizabeth wrote the next morning to her mother to beg her to send the carriage for them during that day. Mrs Bennet sent them a reply that they could not possibly have it before Tuesday. But Elizabeth had decided that she could stay lilt longer, nor did she very much expect that she would be encouraged to. She urged Jane to borrow Mr Bingley’s carriage immediately.
The master of the house heard with real sorrow that they were leaving so soon, and repeatedly tried to persuade the older Miss Bennet that it was not safe for her, but Jane was always able to be decisive when she believed herself to be right.
