“ليس علىَّ أن أشعر بذلك يا جو. فمن الطبيعي جداً أن يكون لكل واحدة منكن منزلها الخاص. ولكن ستمضي سنوات قبل أن يتمكن جون من إعداد منزل لها آمل أن تسير الأمور على ما يرام معها”.

سألت جو: “ألا تتمنين أن تتزوج من رجل ثرى؟ لقد خططت لها أن تتزوج من لورى، ويكون لديها الكثير من المال طوال حياتها. ألن يكون ذلك رائعاً؟ إنه ثرى وعطوف وطيب، كما أنه يحبنا جميعاً”.
“لا تعدى خطط للآخرين يا جو، فالأيام والمشاعر هما ما سيحددان زيجات أصدقائك. إن وضع مثل هذه الخطط قد يفسد صداقاتك”.
“حسناً، لن أفعل. ولكنني أكره أن تسير الأمور على نحو خاطئ؛ في حين أن قليلاً من الشد هنا، وقليلاً من الجذب هناك قد يحسن سير الأمور. أتمنى لو كان هناك شيء نشربه يمنعنا من النمو”.
دخلت ميج إلى الغرفة ومعها الخطاب الذي انتهت من كتابته.
قالت السيدة مارش وهي تنظر إلى الخطاب: “إنه مكتوب بشكل جميل.
من فضلك أضيفي عبارة: “أمي ترسل حبها لجون”.
سألت ميج وهي مبتسمة: “هل تنادينه جون؟”.
“I ought not to feel sad, Jo. It is quite right that you should all have homes of your own. But it must be some years before John can make a home for her. I hope that things will go well for her.”
“Don’t you wish that she would marry a rich man?” asked Jo. “I had planned to have her marry Laurie, and to have plenty of money all her life. Wouldn’t that be nice? He’s rich and kind and good, and he loves us all.”
“Don’t make plans for other people, Jo. Time and their own hearts will make your friends’ marriages. Making such plans may spoil your, friendships. ”
“Well, I won’t. But I hate to see things, going wrong, when a pull here and a cut there would straighten them out. I wish there was something one could drink to stop one growing up.”
Meg came into the room with the finished letter in her hand.
“It’s beautifully written,” said Mrs. March, looking at the letter. “Please add: “Mother sends her Jove to John”.”
“Do you call him John?” asked Meg, smiling.
