اعتقدت للحظة أن عليها الهرب، ولكنها عندما نظرت إلى الرجل العجوز، رأته يبتسم.

قال: “إذن أنت لا تخافين منى؟”.
“ليس كثيراً يا سيدي”.
“وأنا لست حسن المظهر مثل جدك؟”.
“ليس تماما يا سيدي”.
“ولكنك تحبينني؟”.
أجابته جو: “نعم يا سيدي”.
أسعدت هذه الإجابة السيد النبيل العجوز. فضحك وصافح جو وقال لها: “أنت شجاعة مثل جدك يا عزيزتي. ماذا كنت تفعلين مع حفيدي؟”.
“كنت أحاول أن نكون جيرانا طيبين فحسب. لقد كان بمفرده تماماً، وأن وأخواتي أردن أن نساعده قدر استطاعتنا؛ فنحن لم ننس هدايا رأس السنة التي أرسلتها إلينا”.
“كيف حال الأطفال الصغار المساكين الذين أعطيتموهن إفطاركن؟”.
“عائلة هومل؟ إنهم بخير يا سيدي”.
“أخبري والدتك بأنني سآتي إليكن عما قريب: والآن هيا لنتناول بعضا من الشاي”.
في تلك اللحظة، دخل لورى وهو يركض. واندهش للغاية عندما رأى جو وجده يتحدثان معاً، كما فوجئ الرجل العجوز هو الآخر – بينما كانا يشربان الشاي، عندما سمع لورى وجو يتحدثان وكأنهما صديقان حميمان.
فقال في نفسه: “يا لسعادته! لقد أسدته صنيعاً جيداً حقاً”.
بعد الشاي، أخذ لورى جو في جولة عبر المنزل الكبير، وأراها كل الأشياء الجميلة الموجودة فيه، وعندما عادا إلى السيد لورانس العجوز،
For a minute she thought she must run away; but, as she looked at the old man, she saw that he was smiling.
“So you are not afraid of me,” he said.
“Not much, sir.”
“And I am not so good-looking as your mother’s father?”
“Not, quite, sir.”
“But you like me?”
“Yes, I do, sir,” said Jo.
That answer pleased the old gentleman. He laughed, shook hands with her and said:
“You are brave, like your grandfather, my dear. What have you been doing to my grandson?”
“Only trying to be good neighbors. He is all alone, and we girls would like to help him if we can, because we haven’t forgotten your Christmas present.”
“How are the poor little children to whom you gave your breakfast?”
The Hummels? They are doing well, sir.”
“Tell your mother I shall come over to see her soon; and now let us go in to tea.”
At this minute Laurie came running in. He was very surprised to see Jo and his grandfather talking together; and the old man was equally surprised, during tea, to hear Laurie and Jo talking like two old friends.
“How happy he is!” he thought. “She has done him good already.”
