وجون بروك، وكل منهما يعمل أحد طفليهما، ثم أتى السيد لورانس العجوز والسيد مارش وزوجته..

كان حفلاً أسرياً سعيداً للغاية ولم يفكر أحد على الإطلاق أن أياً منهم سيصبح أسعد حالاً بوصول شخص آخر. ولكن عندما انتهت الوجبة، وأخذت ميج وجون طفليهما وعادا لمنزلهما، حدث شيء غريب. دق جرس الباب الأمامي وفتحت جو الباب، لتجد أمامها رجلاً طويلاً ذا لحية في الظلام. في البداية، بدت جو لا تعرفه، ثم صاحت قائلة: “أوه، سيد باير، أنا سعيدة للغاية برؤيتك!”.
أجابها قائلاً: “وأنا سعيد للغاية برؤيتك يا آنسة مارش”.
قالت له: “ادخل”، كان على وشك آن يتبعها عندما سمع أصواتاً صادرة من الداخل.
فتال لها: “لا، لديك حفل”.
فقالت له: “لا، ليس حفلاً، إنها عائلتي. أختي وزوجها وجده وصلوا للتو، ونحن جميعاً سعداء بوجودنا معاً. من فضلك ادخل واعتبر نفسك واحداً منا”.
and John Brooke followed, each carrying one of their children. Then came old Mr. Laurence with Mr. and Mrs. March.
It was a very happy family party, and no one would have thought that any of them could have been much happier by the arrival of another person. But when the meal was over, and Meg and John had taken their children home, a strange thing happened. The front door bell rang and Jo answered it. A tall bearded gentleman stood before her in the darkness. At first Jo seemed not to know who he was, and then she cried out, “Oh, Mr. Bhaer, I am so glad to see you!”
“And I am very glad to see Miss March,” he replied. “Come in,” said Jo; and he was about to follow her when he heard voices.
“But no,” he said, “you have a party.”
“No, it isn’t a party,” said Jo. “It’s only the family. My sister and her husband and his grandfather have just come home, and we are all very happy together. Do come in and make one of us.”
