جلست آمى على ثلث المقعد الذي قدمه لها للجلوس عليه، وأخذا يجدفان منا. كانت آمى تجاف جيداً على الرغم من إنها استخدمت كلتا يديها، بينما استخدم لورى يداً واحدة، وتحرك القارب بانسياب عبر البحيرة الزرقاء.

قالت آمى: “كم نحسن التجديف معاً”.
“هذا صحيح، لدرجة أنني أتمنى أن نجدف معاً دوماً في نفس القارب، ألا تتمنين ذلك يا آمى؟”.
لم تبد آمى أية استجابة لبعض الوقت. واستمرا في التجديف معاً، ثم أعاد لورى سؤاله من جديد عندما لامس القارب الشاطئ، فأجابته برقة شديدة: “نعم يا لورى”.
كانا في غاية السعادة عندما عادا إلى الفندق.

“How well we pull together!” said Amy.
“How well that I wish we might always pull in the same boat. Will you, Amy?”
For some time Amy made no reply. They went on pulling together. Then, as the boat touched the shore, Laurie asked his question again, and was answered very softly: “Yes, Laurie.”
They were very happy when they returned to the hotel.
