قالت جو التي كانت تنظر عبر النافذة، ورأت لورى قادماً عبر الحديقة وفي يده باقة جميلة من الأزهار: “ها هو لورى”.

عندما دخل الغرفة، اتجه نحو ميج وقدم لها الأزهار قائلاً: “للسيدة جون بروك”.
ثم قدم لهما أطيب الأمنيات بحياة سعيدة، ثم التفت إلى أستاذه وقال: “كنت أعرف أنك ستنال ما تريد، فدائماً ما تفعل ذلك وعندما تصمم على شيء تحصل عليه”.
قال جون بروك: “كم هو لطيف منك أن تقول ذلك، أشكرك على أمنياتك لنا بالسعادة وأدعوك الآن لحضور حفل زفافي الذي آمل أن يكون في العام بعد القادم”.
قال لورى: “سأحضر الحقل حتى لو كان في نهاية العالم”.
ثم تابع حديثة بصوت أكثر انخفاضاً: “سنذهب نحن الاثنين يا جو، أليس كذلك؟ ولكن ما الخطب، إنك لا تبدين سعيدة تماماً”.
قالت جو، التي كانت تبكى تقريباً: “لن نعود كما كنا من قبل، فلقد فقدت أعز صديقة لي”.
أجابها لورى: “أنا معك على أية حال، ربما لن أكون خير عون لك، ولكنني سأظل إلى جانبك يا جو طوال حياتي، أقسم لك بذلك. سأنهى دراستي الجامعية عما قريب، وبعد ذلك سنسافر لأي مكان ونرى العالم بأسره. ألن يسعدك ذلك؟”
قالت جو: “أعتقد إنني سأسعد بذلك، ولكننا لا نستطيع أن نعرف ما الذي سيحدث خلال ثلاثة أعوام”.
“هذا صحيح. ألا تتمنين إذ ا استطعت التطلع للأمام، لنرى ما سيحدث آنذاك؟ لكم أتمنى ذلك!”.
“Here comes Laurie,” said Jo, who had been looking through the window, and had seen Laurie coming up the garden path with some lovely flowers in his hand.
When he entered the room he went up to Meg, gave her the flowers and said, “For Mrs. John Brooke.”
Then he offered his good wishes to them both. “I knew that you would get what you wanted,” he said, turning to his teacher. “You always do. When you make up your mind to do a thing, it’s done.”
“It’s very kind of you to say so,” said John Brooke. “Thank you for your good wishes and I ask you now to come to my wedding which I hope will be in the year after next.”
“I’ll come to it even if I’m at the end of the earth,” said Laurie.
“We’ll both be there, won’t we, Jo? But what’s the matter?” he went on, more quietly. “You don’t look too happy.”
“It will never be the same again. I have lost my dearest friend,” said Jo, who was almost crying.
“You’ve got me anyhow,” Laurie answered. “I may not be much good, but I’ll stand by you, Jo, all the days of my life; upon my word I will. I shall have finished at college before long, and then we’ll go away somewhere and see what the world is like. Wouldn’t that please you?”
“I think it would please me, but we can’t know what may
happen in three years,” said Jo.
“That’s true. Don’t you wish you could take a look forward, and see what will be happening then? I do!”
