والدتهم – السيدة هومل – حطب لتشعل به المدفأة لتدفئتهم، وليس لديها طعام تطعمهم به. سوف آخذ أنا وحنا بعض الحطب لها. هل تردن الذهاب معنا وتقدمن لهن إفطاركن؟”.

صمتن جميعاً لبضع دقائق، ثم قالت جو: “من حسن الحظ أننا لم نبدأ في تناول الطعام بعد”.
سألت بيث بشغف: “هل أستطيع الذهاب معكما وحمل بعض الطعام للأطفال الصغار المساكين؟”.
قالت آمى، وهي تتنازل عن الطعام الذي تحبه للغاية بشجاعة: “سوف آخذ لهم الكعك الساخن”.
أما ميج، فكانت تضع بالفعل الخبز والزبد في سلة.
قالت السيدة مارش وهي مبتسمة: “كنت أعرف أنكن ستفعلن ذلك. سوف تذهبن جميعاً وتساعدننا، وعندما نعود سوف يكون لدينا بعض الخبز واللبن لتناولهما على وجبة الإفطار. سوف نتناول كمية أكبر من الطعام على وجبة العشاء حتى نعوض وجبة الإفطار البسيطة”.
وفي المساء، مثلن مسرحية كانت جو قد كتبتها وحضرت بعض صديقاتهن لمشاهدتها، ولقد سارت المسرحية بشكل جيد، وصدر عن الممثلين قدر كبير من الصخب، وكانت الصديقات يستمعن وهن يصحن ويضحكن كثيراً. وبينما كانت المسرحية على وشك الانتهاء، دخلت حنا الغرفة وقالت: “السيدة مارش تريد منكن جميعاً أن تنزلن وتتناولن شيئاً”.
لم يكن هذا متوقعاً، ولا حتى من قبل الممثلين، وعندما رأين الطاولة، نظرن إلى بعضهن ووجوههن تعكس رؤية مفاجأة سارة. كان هناك كعك بجميع أنواعه، وكانت هناك فاكهة وحلوى. كان عشاءً رائعاً، وفي وسط الطاولة، كانت هناك زهرية كبيرة تحتوى على ورود جميلة.

They were all silent for a few minutes. Then Jo said, “What a good thing we hadn’t begun to eat.”
“May I go and help carry the things to the poor little children?” asked Beth eagerly.
“I shall take the hot cakes,” said Amy, bravely giving up the food which she most liked.
Meg was already. putting me bread and butter into a basket.
“I thought that you would do it.” said Mrs. March, smiling.
“You shall all go and assist and when we come back we will have bread and milk for breakfast. We shall eat more at dinnertime so there will be no real loss. ”
In the evening they acted a play which Jo had written and a few friends came in to watch it. The play went well. The actors made a great deal of noise, and their friends who were listening shouted and laughed. Just as it was about to end Hannah entered the room and said, “Mrs. March wants you all to come down and eat something.”
This was not expected, even by the actors, and when they saw the table, they looked at one another with delighted surprise. There were cakes of all sorts; there was fruit, and sweets. It was a wonderful supper. In the middle of the table there was a big vase of beautiful flowers.
