كانت آمى تشعر بالسعادة عندما ترى في أعينهم نظرة الحزن عندما كانوا يبتعدون عنها.

بعد فترة قصيرة للغاية، كان مع جون بروك ما يكفي من المال ليشترى منزلاً ل ميج. كان منزلاً صغيراً للغاية، له حديقة صغيرة. لم تكن الحديقة جميلة للغاية لأنها زرعت للتو ببعض البذور، ولكن ميج كانت تتخيل شكلها عندما تنفتح الأزهار. كانت أغلب الأشياء الموجودة في المنزل الصغير هدايا من أسرتها ومن لورى، فقد منعت لها بيث قطعاً من القماش لتنظيف المنزل وغسل الأطباق، وساعات جو و آمى والدتهما في إعداد المنزل ل ميج وزوجها، وأرسلت العمة مارش عدداً كبيراً من مفارش الطاولة ومفارش غرفة النوع كهدية للعروس، ولكن نظراً لأنها قد قالت من قبل: إنها لن تساعد ميج بأي شيء على الإطلاق، ادعت أن الهدايا أرسلت من قبل صديق. ولقد ضحك الجميع من الطريقة التي أرسلت بها الهدايا دون الحنث بالعهد الذي قطعته على نفسها عندما كانت غاضبة من ميج.
في النهاية تم إعداد كل شيء، وتجولت ميج ووالدتها عبر أرجاء المنزل معاً. قالت السيدة مارش: “هل يعجبك يا ميج؟ هل ترينه منزلاً حقيقياً، هل تعتقدين أنك ستكونين سعيدة هنا؟”.
“نعم يا أمي، لقد أعجبني، وأعرف أن علىَّ شكركم جميعاً، ولكنني سعيدة للغاية للحد الذي يمنعني من التعبير عمَّا أشعر به”.
قالت آمى، التي دخلت في هذه اللحظة إلى غرفة المعيشة بعد أن انتهت من مساعدة حنا في ترتيب المطبخ: “أتمنى فقط لو كان لديها بعض الخدم!”.
قالت ميج: “لا يا آمى. لست بحاجة إلى خادمة، فأنا عازمة على القيام بالعمل بنفسي، وسوف يكون هناك ما يكفي لأظل مشغولة، كما آمل أن أكون”.

Very soon John Brooke had enough money to buy a house for Meg. It was a very small house. with a little garden. The garden did not look very well because it had only just been planted with seeds” but Meg saw it as it would be when the flowers were out. Most of the things in the little house were presents from her family and Laurie. Beth made the cloths for dusting and washing-up. Jo and Amy helped their mother to prepare the house for Meg and her husband. Aunt March sent a large number of very beautiful table-cloths and bed – clothes as a wedding present, but as she had said she would never give Meg anything, she pretended that the present was. sent by a friend. Everyone laughed at the way in which she sent a present without breaking the promise which she had made t herself when she was angry with Meg.
At last everything was ready, Meg and her mother went through the house together, and Mrs. March said: “Do you like it, Meg? Does it seem like home, and do you think that you will be happy here?”
“Yes, Mother, I love it, and I know how much I ought to thank you all; but I am almost too happy to talk about it.”
“If only she had a few servants!” said Amy who had just come into the sitting-room after helping Hannah to arrange the kitchen.
“No, Amy,” said Meg. “I don’t need a servant. I mean to do the work myself, and there will only be just enough to keep me busy – as I wish to be.”
