ذهبت جو على الفور إلى غرفة السيد العجوز الذي قال بصوت غاضب:

“ادخلي”.
قالت: “أنا جو يا سيدي. لقد جئت لأعيد كتاباً وأستعير كتاباً آخر”.
نظر إليها وكأنه يعرف أن هذا ليس السبب الحقيقي لمجيئها…
سألها: “ما الذي فعلة هذا الولد؟ لقد أرسلت والدتك في طلبه، لذا أنا متأكد أنه ارتكب خطأ شنيعاً، ما الذي فعله؟”.
قالت جو: “لقد أخطأ حقاً، ولكننا سامحناه، وبعد ما قاله لنا، أصبحنا جميعاً على ثقة من أنه لن يرتكب هذا الخطأ مرة أخرى. وقد قطعنا وعداً بألا نخبر أحداً بما فعل”.
قال السيد لورانس: “هذا لن يفيد، أريد أن أعرف ما إذا كان قد أساء لوالدتك بأي شكل، وإذا كان الأمر كذلك، فيجب أن أضربه”.
قالت جو: “لا، لم يفعل شيئاً لوالدتي. وهى لا تريد أحداً أن يعرف شيئاً عما حدث. وقد وعدها لورى أنه لن يخبر أحداً بذلك. لهذا السبب لم يستطيع إخبارك بما جرى، ولهذا أتمنى أن تسامحه يا سيدي”.
“حسناً، إذا كان الأمر كذلك، فأعتقد أنني يجب أن أسامحه؛ ولكنة كثيراً ما يغضبني، ولا أعرف كيف ستسير الأمور لو استمر بهذه الطريقة”.
قالت جو: “سأخبرك يا سيدي. سوف يهرب”.
عندئذ، بدا السيد لورانس منزعجاً للغاية، وقال لها: “حسناً جداً! اذهبي وأحضريه ليتناول العشاء”.
“ولكنه لن يأتي يا سيدي. إنه غاضب للغاية لأنك قلت: إنك لم تصدقه عندما قال لك: إنه لا يستطيع أن يخبرك بما حدث، وأعتقد أن تعنيفك له
Jo went at once to the old gentleman’s room. He said, “Come in,” in an angry voice.
“It’s only Jo, sir,” she said. “I’ve come to bring back a book and ask for another. ”
He looked at her as if he knew that this was not her real reason for coming.
“What has that boy been doing?” -he asked. “Your mother sent for him, so I am sure that he has. done something very wrong. What is it?”
“He did do wrong,” said Jo, “but we have forgiven him, and after what he has said to us we are all sure that he will not do the same thing again. We all promised not to tell what he had done.”
“That won’t do,” said Mr. Laurence. “I wish to know whether he has been in any way unkind to your mother. If he has, I must beat him. ”
“No, he has done nothing to my mother,” said Jo. “She does not wish anyone to know what happened, and Laurie promised her that he would not tell anyone. That is why he could not tell you, sir and I hope that you will forgive him.”
“Well, if that is so, I suppose I must,” said Mr. Laurence; “but he often makes me very angry, and I don’t know how things will end if we go on in this way.”
