ذا لون أحمر مائل للبنى. كانت تحب الركض وتسلق الأشجار، والقيام بالأشياء التي يفعلها الأولاد.

كانت أختها بيث – التي كانت في الثالثة عشرة من عمرها – ذات عينين لامعتين ووجه رقيق مثل الزهرة. كانت رقيقة تراعى شعور الآخرين، ولكنها لم تكن تجرؤ على التحدث مع الأشخاص الذين لا تعرفهم.
كانت تختلف تماماً عن آختها الصغرى – آمى – التي كانت لا تزال في الثانية عشرة من عمرها. كانت آمى تعتقد أنها شخص مهم، وكانت شديدة الفخر بشعرها الذهبي، وبشرتها البيضاء وعينيها الزرقاوين، وعلى الرغم من أنها كانت تعرف آن أنفها مسطح بعض الشيء، إلا أنها كانت تأمل أن تكبر وتصبح سيدة فاتنة، وأن تتزوج بسيد ثرى نبيل.
أما عن والدة الفتيات – السيدة مارش – فقد كرست كل وقت – من أجل الجنود، وإعداد ملابس تساعدهم على الشعور بالدفء، وطهي وجبات ساخنة لهم. كما أعطت الفتيات الهدايا التي تلقينها في احتفال رأس السنة إلى الجنود. ولهذا السبب، كن يتذمرن، وهو ما جعل جو أيضا تقول:
“إن احتفال رأس السنة لن يكون مبهجاً دون هدايا”.
قالت بيث وهي تضع حذاء والدتها أمام المدفأة لتدفئته: “أمي على وشك العودة”. فرفعت جو الحذاء أمام النار ليدفأ بسرعة أكبر.
قالت جو: “تحتاج أمي إلى زوج جديد من الأحذية، فلقد بلى هذا الحذاء ويجب التخلص منه”.
قالت يبث: “لدى دولار، أعتقد أنني سأشترى لها حذاء جديدا”. فصاحة آمى: “لا! سأفعل أنا ذلك”.

Her thirteen year old sister, Beth, was bright eyed and with a sweet face like a rose. She was gentle and thoughtful, but she dared not talk to people whom she did not know.
She was greatly different from her youngest sister, Amy, who was only twelve years old. Amy thought she was an important person and was very proud of her golden hair, white skin, and blue eyes. Though she knew that her nose was somehow flat, she hoped to grow up to be a charming lady, and to marry a rich gentleman.
As for the girl’s mother, Mrs. March, she dedicated all her time to working for the soldiers, making them warm clothing and cooking them hot meals. The girls also had given up their Christmas presents for the soldiers. For this reason they were complaining, and that was why Jo said:
“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents.” “Mother is about to come back home,” said Beth as she put her mother’s shoes in front of the fire to warm them. Then Jo held them up close to it so as to warm them quickly.
“Mother needs a new pair of shoes. These shoes are quite worn out and should be thrown away,” she said.
Beth said, “I’ve got a dollar, I think I’ll buy her a pair with it.”,
“No! I will do that,” cried Amy.
