ثبت العجوز ذراع الدفة وأحكم ربط الشراع ومد يده أسفل مؤخرة القارب ليجلب الهراوة. كانت عبارة عن مقبض مجداف أخذ من مجداف مكسور تم نشره منه بالمنشار بطول قدمين والنصف تقريبًا. ولم يكن بمقدره استخدامها بفاعلية إلا عند إمساكها بيد واحدة بسبب يد المقبض وقد أمسكها بإحكام بيده اليمنى مثبتًا يده فوقها بينما يرقب قدوم القروش وكانا اثنين.
لابد أن أترك الأول يأخذ قضمة كبيرة ثم أضربه على طرف أنفه أو على قمة رأسه مباشرة.
اقترب القرشان معًا، وأثناء مراقبته للأقرب يفتح فكيه ويغرسهما في جانب السمكة الفضي، رفع الهراوة عاليًا ونزل بها بقوة على أعلى راس القرش العريض. استشعر صلابته المطاطية أثناء نزول الهراوة عليه. ولكنه استشعر صلابة العظام أيضًا وضرب القرش مرة أخرى على طرف الأنف أثناء انزلاقه بعيدًا عن السمكة.
كان القرش الآخر يدخل ويخرج، والآن دخل ثانية وهو فاغر فكيه عن آخرهما. رأى العجوز قطعًا من لحم السمكة الأبيض تسيل من جانب فكيه أثناء اصطدامه بالسمكة وإغلاقه لفكيه. ضربه ولكنه لم يصب سوى الرأس؛ فنظر إليه القرش وترك اللحم. هوى عليه العجوز مجددًا بهراوته عندما انزلق مبتعدًا ليبلع ما التهمه ولكنه لم يصب سوى الطبقة المطاطية الصلبة الكثيفة فقط.
قال العجوز: “تعال أيها القرش. تعال ثانية”.
أتى القرش في اندفاع وضربه العجوز أثناء إغلاقه لفكيه. ضربه بقوة ومن أقصى ارتفاع استطاع أن يرفع الهراوة إليه. في هذه المرة استشعر

The old man could see pieces of the meat of the fish spilling white from the corner of his jaws as he bumped the fish and closed his jaws. He swung at him and hit only the head and the shark looked at him and wrenched the meat loose. The old man swung the club down on him again as he slipped away to swallow and hit only the heavy solid rubberiness.
“Come on, galano,” the old man said. “Come in again.”
