قال العجوز:” أود أن آخذ ديماجيو العظيم للصيد. يقولون إن والده كان صياداً، ربما كان فقيراً مثلنا وسوف يتفهم مطلبنا”.
“إن والد سيسلر العظيم لم يكن فقيراً؛ فقد كان- أقصد الوالد- يلعب في الدوريات الكبرى عندما كان في مثل سني”.
“عندما كنت في سنك كنت أقف أمام صارى سفينة مربعة الأشرع والصواري كانت مبحرة إلى أفريقيا وكنت أرى أسوداً على الشاطئ ليلاً.
“أعلم، أخبرتني بهذا”.
“هل يجب أن نتحدث عن أفريقيا أم عن البيسبول؟”.
قال الغلام”: البيسبول على ما أعتقد أخبرني عن جون جيه. ماكجرو”. (نطق حرف جيه جوتا).
“أعتاد أن يأتي إلى المقهي كذلك في بعض الأحيان في الماضي ولكنه كان فظاً ويصير صعب المراس عندما يحتسى الشراب وإلى جانب اهتمامه بالبيسبول كان مغرماً بالخيول. كان يحمل قوائم بالخيول المشاركة بالسباقات طوال الوقت في جيه، وعادة ما كان يدير مراهنات على الخيول بالهاتف”.
قال الغلام” كان مديراً عظيماً يظن أبي أنه الأفضل على الإطلاق”.
قال العجوز:” فقط لأنه جاء إلى هنا كثيراً فلو كان دروتشر قد استمر في الاتيان إلى هنا كل عام، لظن والدك انه أفضل مدير”.
“من هو أفضل مدير حقاً، لوك ام مايك جونزالز؟”.
“اعتقد أنهما على نفس المستوى”.
“وأفضل صياد هو أنت”.
” لا. أعرف صيادين آخرين أفضل مني”.
قال الغلام:” هراء. هناك العديد من الصيادين الجيدين وبعض الصيادين العظام؛ ولكن لا يوجد سوى أنت”.
