نبذة عن تأليف ونشر العجوز والبحر
وصف هيمنجواي الرواية بأنها أدب قصصي مستوحى من العديد من الأحداث الحقيقية،فقد ورد في مقال يحمل عنوان “Water On the Blue”(غسكوير 5 إبريل 1936،الصفحات 184-185)قصة رجل عجوز اصطاد سمكة مرلين هائلة الحجم ظلت تقطر قاربه داخل البحر طوال يومين وليلتين،واستطاع في النهاية أن يصطادها برمحه،وفي فبراير عام 1939،أعلن هيمنجواي ل ماكسويل بيركنز من شركة سكربنر عن رغبته في كتابة قصة الرجل العجوز-وكان هيمنجواي نفسه قد اصطاد سمكة مرلين دمرتها القروش جزئياً (مجلة لايف 33، 22سبتمبر 1952).وقد أنهي مسودة أولى للقصة مطبوعة على الآلة الكاتبة في 1 أبريل 1951.وكانت في الأصل خاتمة رواية (تصل إلى سدسها)تدور حول البحر.وأرسل النسخة المطبوعة على الآلة الكاتبة إلى سكربنر في العاشر من مارس 1925،وقد نشرت في مجلة لايف،في الأول من سبتمبر 1952،ونشرتها شركة سكربنر في صورة كتاب في الثامن من سبتمبر 1952،وطبع من الطبعة الأولى 50.000 نسخة.
how the hero must obey a code which rules out pessimism and calls for honesty, courage and generosity. The Old Man and the Sea stresses a capacity to accept suffering: ‘ How much did you suffer?’ asks Manolin, to receive the answer “Plenty”. It is not, however, passive suffering Hemingway depicts but an ability to recognize the nature of human experience and to deal with it as a honorably as possible.
The achievement, however, is not only which illustrates through action a moral approach to the tests imposed by human existence; it is also an achievement of expression. And this is what made Hemingway so influential. His style has influenced many other writers through the compelling efficiency of its economy, the cinematic concentration upon detail and the convincing way his characters feels and talk, behave and reflect. He built up atmosphere; he portrayed action; and he did it with the supreme artistry that comes from careful craftsmanship.
A NOTE ON THE WRITING AND PUBLICTION OF THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA
Hemingway described the book as fiction based on many actual occurrences. An article, ’On the Blue Water’ ( Esquire 5 April 1936,pp.184-5)tells the story of an old man who caught a great marlin which towed his skiff out to sea for two days and nights and was finally harpooned by the old man. In February 1939 Hemingway told Maxwell Perkins of Scribner’s of his wish to write the old man’s story-and Hemingway himself had caught a marlin which partially destroyed by sharks (Life,33,22September 1952). He concluded a first draft of the story in typescript by 1 April 1951.
