كبرياء وهوى – الفصل 18 بيمبرلي- ص7

مديرة المنزل مؤيدة له ولشخصيته، وحين نظرت مرة أخرى إلى صورته ، انتابتها مشاعر الامتنان تجاهه لحسن رأيه بها أكثر من أي وقت مضى. 

بعد أن انتهوا من مشاهدة المنزل، توجهوا جميعاَ إلى خارج المنزل يقودهم البستاني لكي يستمتعوا بمنظر الأراضي المزروعة. وبينما كانوا في طريقهم إلى النهر، استدارت إليزابيث لتنظر ثانية إلى بيمبرلي، وأثناء ذلك جاء مالك المنزل فجأة من الطريق المؤدي إلى الشارع الخلفي للمنزل. 
كان يبعد عنها حوالي 20 باردة، وكان ظهوره مفاجئاً إلى الحد الذي كان يصعب معه تجنب رؤيته، فالتقت عيناهما على الفور، فتوقف وبدا للحظة عاجزاً عن الحركة نتيجة المفاجأة. ولكنه سرعان ما تمالك نفسه، وتقدم في اتجاه المجموعة، وتحدث إلى إليزابيث بنبرة لم تخل من التهذب، وإن كانت قد افتقرت إلى الهدوء التام . 
همت إليزابيث بالانصراف على الفور، ولكنه حين اقترب استقبلت تحياته في ارتباك تعذر السيطرة عليه، ووقف السيد جاردنر وزوجته بعيداً بعض الشيء أثناء حديثه إلى ابنة الأخت التي صدمها لقاؤهما، وبالكاد أمكنها رفع عينيها في وجهه، ولم تعرف كيف تجيب عن استفساراته المهذبة عن أحوال عائلتها. غمرتها الدهشة للتغيير الذي طرأ على سلوكه منذ أن رحل في المرة الأخيرة، ووجدت أن كل جملة يتحدث بها تزيدها حيرة وارتباكاً. وحين عاد إلى ذهنها مشاعر الحرب التي انتابتها نتيجة وجودها هناك، صارت الدقائق المعدودة التي مضت بينهما من أصعب اللحظات في 
she looked once again at his picture, she felt more grateful to him for his good opinion of her than she had ever done before.
The house had now been examined, and they went outside in the charge of the gardener to admire the grounds. As they walked towards the river, Elizabeth turned back to look again, and as she did so, the owner of the building suddenly came forward from the road that led behind it. 
They were within 20 yards of each other, and his appearance was so sudden that it was impossible to avoid him. Their eyes met immediately. He stopped, and then for a moment seemed unable to move from surprise. Quickly recovering his self-control, though, he walked towards the party and spoke to Elizabeth, if not with perfect calm, at least with perfect politeness. 
She had immediately turned away, but when he approached she received his greetings with a confusion that it was impossible to control. Mr and Mrs Gardiner stood a little way off while he was talking to their niece, who, shocked by their meeting, hardly dared lift her eyes to his face and did not know what answer she returned to his polite inquiries after her family. She was full of surprise at the change in his manner since they last parted, and found that every sentence that he spoke was increasing her confusion. As the realization of the awkwardness of her being found there returned to her mind, the few minutes in which they were together were some of the most uncomfortable in her life. He did not seem less shocked.
