PIONEERING EGYPTIAN ARCHITECT
PROF. ALY RAAFAT
Professor and previous head of department of Architecture – Cairo
University 1 st Architecture Nile Award, winner.
Prof. Aly Raafat is one of the pioneers in Architecture,Graduated from
Cairo University 1949, taught in the Departmentof Architecture till higher
studies mission in 1952. Since 1957 tilltoday teaching Design, theory and
history of architecture,supervising of hundreds of masters and PH.D thesis
in Egyptianand Arab Universities, delivering public lectures on
architectural& art theories. During nearly seventy years of teaching, he
formed schools in the theories and history of architecture with the aid of his
assistants, students and his books, on ArchitectureConstruction and
Theories published in Cairo, New York and Moscow .
His 1 st “Triad of Architectural Creativity”, in five volumes in Arabic is
considered a reference book in Arabic that aggregates & combines
between the Architectural creativity both systematic & intuitive. This set in
Arabic summing up 60 years of Academic and Consulting works. They
have been written for those who need to make use of combining theory &
practice in architecture.
As a pioneer in Architecture, Prof. Aly won many awards “nationally”
beside the highest State Award “Nile Award (art-architecture) 2011, Hassan
Fathi Award 2010, the prize of the first Arab architect, “Society of Islamic
Cities” 2005. He also received the medal of excellence in 1985 and the
State Award of Appreciation in architecture in 1990, and chosen the
Honorary President of “Egyptian Society of Architects” 2017.
As of his position in architecture field, Prof. Aly Raafat did many national
contributions including the chairmanship of project committee of upgrading
urban environment and the preservation of architectural and physical
statues of the territory of Greater Cairo (Garden City and Maadi areas), the
membership of the advisory committees for several government projects
and member of the architectural committee – Supreme Council of Culture
since 2006.
