RANDOML Y ERASING THE URBAN HERITAGE 3من اصل3
This campaign of extermination and bulldozing was aimed at modernization,
I modernization incompatible with preserving the memory of the nations
and the consciousness of the people? Is modernization incompatible with
the preservation of buildings whose walls witnessed the events of modern
Egypt? Would maintaining it have hampered development plans and dreams
of modernization?
Wasn’t it noticed that the disappearance of these buildings will surely
disappear the impact and the form of consciousness? Will our streets
remain the same after disappearing of those buildings? Will the impact of
those streets 0 remain the same? Will these streets be able to instill the
sense of belonging and the concept of the homeland as did those buildings
that were destroyed?
Then what after modernization? Will our streets become architectural
deformation, as in Dubai, or Riyadh? Which makes us strangers in our
home countries or makes our streets incompatible with us or our children?
These are all open questions that need to be answered. What is most
surprising is the absence of the architect, who must be the owner of the
highest voice in that case, the same person whom I have been summoning
him for a long time to attend and that never happened.
