COAL FIRED POWER PLANT IN EGYPT
Orascom Construction, a major company of Egyptian billionaire
Nassef Sawiris operating in chemical and building sectors, announced
recently that Orascom signed a $200 million contracts to carry out projects
in Egypt and Algeria.
Such projects include establishing a new factory to produce cement with
6000 tons a day for a private sector client in Algeria. Furthermore, the
company signed another contract of the infrastructure works for an
industrial complex in Algeria. The two projects valued at $180 million.
Orascom Construction regards energy sector as one of the leading sectors
to achieve economic development, as this sector is the main drive that help
government accomplish its development goals. Accordingly, Orascom group
is currently constructing the two largest power plants in Egypt ( Assiut and
West Damietta) with 4800 megawatt capacity each.
It is planned that the two projects will be implemented under engineering,
purchases, building and funding system, under which Orascom enables the
client to get a competitive financing deal. Orascom’s share of the two
projects is some $420 million and consequently these projects will enhance
the company’s role in electricity production in the Middle East and North
Africa.
Orascom Construction is one of 32 local and global companies and
consortiums seeking to win a bid offered by the Egyptian New and
Renewable Energy Authority with a view to competing to construct the
second solar energy plant. The plant will be with 200 megawatt capacity
under the system of B.O.O. The estimated cost of the plant, which will be
established in the western area of the Nile near New Menia governorate, is
€200 \million.
