It’s considered to be one of the most beautiful mosques in Egypt, if not the
most beautiful as per the archeologists. It’s also considered to be the most
well-known part of Salah El Din’s citadel to the extent that people confuse
it to be Mohamed Ali’s citadel, not Salah El Din’s. This is due to the fame
that the mosque has when it comes to the architectural style that mixes
history, arts, politics with decorations.
Mohamed Ali realized that it was necessary for the mosque to be built in
order to pray the 5 prayers along with his desire to make it his graveyard.
Hence, he chose the Turkish engineer “Youssef Bushnaaq ” to lay the
design of the mosque. He copied the style of El Sultan Ahmed’s mosque in
Asitanna . He copied he style of the front yard and the fountain, with few
amendments in the style.
Building the mosque took place in 1246 Hijri /1830 and it continued non-
stop till the death of Mohamed Ali in 1265 Hijri/1849, and he got his wish
by being buried in the grave he wanted inside the mosque. The mosque was
taken care of by Mohamed Ali’s family.
The mosque is famous for the Turkish touch in the architecture and
decorations. It is built over a land space of 5000 square meter . The mosque
takes a rectangular shape that is divided into two parts: the eastern section
that takes a space up to 2500 square meters. It includes a prayer house and
a courtyard. As for the western section;
