Kitchen space is the most complex space in any house, over the years; new
surfaces are utilized in kitchen design. Traditionally wood has been the
main element in all kitchen surfaces, while walls are covered with paint.
Few decades back tiles were used to cover walls instead of paint since
believed easier to clean and better to protect the overall appearance of the
kitchen.
While recently a mix of paint and tiles are thought to be a better
compensation and balance between aesthetics and functionality. The
kitchen front doors are usually made out of finished wood. While in
contemporary alternatives, stainless steel, and glass are inserted heavily
along with wood. Some voices also advocate for the use of aluminum in
cabinet structures and front doors, which usually lacks richness and
aesthetic elements.
Speaking of kitchen surfaces, the worktop is the main surface exposed to
kitchen environment in terms of cutting, and food preparation. Traditionally
marble and granite is used to be the main material for worktop surface. The
natural material varies in textures and in colors.
It is thought however, that granite is more suitable than marble in kitchen
use since the material is more dense therefore more durable and less
responsive to food and liquids. Other materials such as natural and
engineered wood, polymers, glass, concrete and engineered stone have also
been introduced to kitchen worktops. Below I will go through these types
and identify their advantages and disadvantages.
Natural stone, which is divided as mentioned earlier into Marble and
Granite. Marble has the most variety in terms of colors and natural textures.
It adds a very powerful visual element to the kitchen and has its own
natural beauty.
