It may be used for the kitchen worktop but it could get stained from food
preparation and liquid spills making it not very durable. Granite on the other
hand does not react to liquids and food ingredients as marble does, it also
has harder surface therefore more durable and resistant to scratches.
Engineered stone, it is basically ground stone mixed with resins and
adhesives to add better mechanical and physical properties.
It is commercially known as Quartz which is used in the mixture on the top
layer making it resistant to scratches and also hygienic, it is however a
brittle material and not as scratch resistant as granite.
Natural wood was traditionally used as kitchen worktops, yet recently it is
used in dining extensions or bars. It has the natural beauty and feel yet it is
not resistant to scratches. It also reacts to change of climate and
environmental conditions. Engineered wood on the other hand is composed
of small particles of wood mixed with resins and compressed into larger
sheets, it is less durable when exposed to impact yet very durable against
compression. It is also resistant to humidity and climate change. These
manufactured wood sheets are usually protected with a layer of polymer.
This laminated layer due to its nature shall not be exposed to direct heat. It
is however resistant to water and scratches based on the regular use in the
kitchen.
Corian is an engineered composite with polymeric material as its base, it is
very resistant to water yet not resistant enough for direct heat or scratches.
It is always advisable to use a block of wood or stone to place hot objects
on it,
