Behind the walls of ancient Cairo, craftsmen were devoted to the handicraft industry
with its intricacies, accuracy, mastery, special character and creations. Spiritual
energies emanate through those crafts to spread a spirit of freedom perceived by the
users of architectural spaces.
Through the Egyptian history, crafts and architecture were always connected, crafts
helped emphasizing nature’s gifts of light, shadow and materials within architecture
spaces through the beauty of well-crafted wooden latticed screens and shades. A little
crafted wooden window can provide sense of freedom to the space as well as a single
light ray.
Nowadays “in Egypt, crafts dissociated from architecture therefore. the spiritual values
and elements that defines the space were lost, the proposal is trying to put the spot on
the crafts role in defining the sense of spirituality in architectural spaces.
Based on cultural symbolism and formal references, the pavilion performs as a cultural
signifier creating dynamic spatial experience based on inherited cultural layers that
leads to the idea of the FREESPACE with an understanding of the mutual dependence of
light, shadow, and architectural form.
