Oh that Pocket NC, it can only work on pieces the size of an orange.
So that engine block can really only be a display piece, or maybe just maybe a crude two stroke if any matching parts can be found.

@Long Nguyen Other decent desktop cnc machines go for around $2500, for another $1500, you get the extra axis points. For someone looking to go beyond the hobbyist, a small business could definitely find the value in that extra $1500. There is nothing else even close to that price or size.

We have customers that run 12 hours a day. While it is not considered a production machine, if you take care of it and properly maintain it, you can run for extended time periods
JetNmyFuture
JetNmyFuture5 months ago (edited)
All of these machines and the video presentations overstate the capabilities and understate the effort needed to get good parts. I am a mechanical and electrical engineer with a small manufacturing company. I like the spirit behind these machines, but they have very limited capability and I think the videos gloss over the fact that the parts that come out will not be like what you get from full size machines with commercial software. For roughing-in ideas they may be kinda neat and all, but I am not sure I would bother. CNC machining (from 10 years experience) is a lot more than pushing a mouse button. It seems low cost until you spend a week trying to make a single part and it still is not all that great.
4
JetNmyFuture
JetNmyFuture1 month ago
Totally agree that a comparison to full size machines is ridiculous. My point is that machining is a very challenging endeavor even if you are going very slow. I had some hobby level machines before and the spindle runout, ACME screws, poor position feedback, lack of structural rigidity prevented me from making anything other than rough prototypes – even if I was willing to wait the extra time by taking very light cuts. I hope that this machine may turn a corner for low cost CNC as a truly useful tool.

Novice question what do the numbers mean on the step craft CNC machine models eg 1/210 and 1/300 models
Stepcraft Inc
Stepcraft Inc1 month ago
The number refers to the workable area (in MM) in the Y direction. So the 300 is 300mm in Y and 210mm in X. The 840 is 600mm in X and 840mm in Y

Hi, Chris. Yes…1 ruined ball bearing. Pressing a ball bearing into a OD housing by pressing the inner race, passes the force THROUGH the balls and DENTS the races. The technical term is BRINELLING. What if that was a class 7 matched spindle ball bearing? $1,200 in the scrap heap. I won’t buy that machine because of that faux pas.

At 1.49 there are some traces that aren’t connected to their respective pads (right side of view) and some traces milled so thin they aren’t there any more.In this day and age we should be able to get way better accuracy than this.
Matthew Prince
Matthew Prince5 months ago
I get that when they say they are affordable they mean that it is affordable against a full size industrial based machine. And it is neat that you can get 3 machines in one for a lower cost. Hell a good laser engraver/cutter is around 4000 by it’s self. but Hobbiest, students, and Makers generally don’t have 4000 laying around to drop on a machine that doesn’t look to much different than some of the cheaper 3d Printers. Really the only “revolutionary” thing that they have done is made a housing to hold 3 different devices and packaged them into a housing that can be removed. Is that worth the 200% increase in price? No.

Boxey is what sounds like a box……. 8000$ box that is so f’n slow lol.. Serously My cheap china cnc laser cutter blew this damn thing out of the water with same speed setting same program. Was finished 3 hours faster lol! one cost 350$ one cost 800$ do the math! should be blow away fro 8 grand! And the damn cutter is a joke! the movement so freaking slow of the screw design! that is burns the wood at lowest settings that router goes they show! only use for this honestly is a 3d printer even at that for 300$ again can buy china crap one does better! Sorry but fail! I got rid of it lol! and guy bought it from me did same!
but do have to say as far as cnc milling metal wise works fine and it did do all it’s functions very easy and software is very easy to use even if your a newb! So yeah not for me!

Can anyone direct me to a cnc that can cut something slightly harder, like stainless steel(also desktop).
latheguy123
latheguy1235 months ago
+Juan-Pierre Oosthuizen do you know the meaning of ‘slightly’ ? stainless is like 4 times harder than aluminium, and aluminum is like 2 times harder than wood.
the forces for cutting go up geometrically so your ‘slightly’ in machine terms is like a factor of 16 times
in more practical terms, those shafts that are used to align the machine and are as thick as your little finger ? they would need to be as thick as your wrist.
