The adoption of BIM technology is rapidly growing around the world,
although it was a bit shy in the Arab world and developed countries; now
it’s noticeably finding its way through again; as the focus of the construction
industry is now on eliminating waste and efficiently improving quality and
profitability of construction projects.
As simple as Wikipedia defines it: “Building information modeling is a
process involving the generation and management of digital representations
of physical and functional characteristics of places”. Autodesk defines BIM
as “An intelligent 3D model-based process that gives architecture,
englneertng, and construction (AEC) professionals the insight and tools to
more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and
infrastructure”.
Today the AEC market sees BIM as a necessity for both buildings and
infrastructure construction; we see it as a philosophy of getting our job
done smoothly at a lower cost and a controlled risk.
In many countries, local codes are now embracing BIM as a condition to
select engineering firms and contractors, soon in the UAE all projects will
be coordinated using BIM technology. In addition, many private sector
developers are adopting BIM as has proven to be a reliable time and money
saver.
We have applied our BIM practices in our recent luxurious compounds in
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; the results were outstanding! As the project
has to deal with very precise details, many new building technologies were
easily applied and integrated within the complex project. BIM took project
execution and coordination to a different level of clarity and harmony.
Time, money and effort were saved; the developer and our company were
able to achieve high level of profitability.
