FACADE TYPE 03 – Mashrabiya
This façade type is predominantly shaded by a perforated screen that controls the
amount of solar gain. The shading screen will be supported by vertical post that are
fixed back to the curtain walling behind.
The gap between the glass and screen will allow for cleaning from the ground.
They key drivers for the façade design and material selection for The Science City
project include the following;
Glazing performance and shading;
Sand and dust building;
Local sourcing of material.
Ease and frequency of maintenance and cleaning
Durability of material and finishes
Glazing performance and shading
Where glazing is included on the façade it is important that the glass is shaded for the
majority of the time. The design incorporates a combination o f shading geometries
including;Vertical fins Over-hanging slabs at roof level Horizontal shading Mashrabiya
shading screens
With the exception of the North facing facades, all the glazing should be shaded a
certain extent. The above systems will reduce
Large uninterrupted spans over flexible exhibition spaces.
The central towers is an example of a cantilevering structure. The observation decks are
supported via a cantilevering steel plate girder that tapers as it approaches the
perimeter. The bottom «stile» of the tower is made from a concrete tube acting as core
to provide stability for lateral loads as wind and seismic.
