along with the design of a 7 star JW Marriott Hotel. The success of the
design and the hotel was recognized by Marriott Hotels International. In
addition, it drew the attention of His Highness the Aga Khan himself, who
was seeking to build a large public park in historic Cairo .
In 2004, the Azhar Park opened its doors to the general public. It was the
first of its kind in the Middle East – a modern park, complete with
restaurants, children play areas, and pedestrian walkways, situated in the
heart of historic Cairo and affording never-before seen views of Islamic
Cairo. It also served to revitalize the adjacent Darb al- Ahmar district,
drawing on the unique skillset of local artisans and also providing
uninterrupted green space for countless middle to low income Cairenes ,
who could otherwise not afford it. The Azhar Park was the cover story for
the American Society of Landscape Architecture publication and drew
international praise. It was the subject of a full length narrated documentary
as well .
Since then, Sites International has been at the forefront of the design
consultancy market in Egypt and the Middle East, participating in numerous
new residential developments, universities, parks, and urban revitalization
efforts. It has continued to expand both in depth and breadth across all
major design areas. However, it remains dedicated at its core to the
promotion of landscape architecture. It currently remains the largest
landscape architecture consultancy firm in North Africa and the Middle
East.
