RENOVATE TO REUSE 1من اصل2
Several homes, palaces, markets and stores are subject to reuse especiall with the
change of owners to 2nd or third generations. These in most cases are unable to carry
expenses of upkeep and maintenance. These situations encourage the governmental
authorities or cultural non- governmental (N.G.O.S) to carry their responsibilities. They
interfere in saving their edifices by purchasing, renting, sponsoring or taking over.
In Egypt the Ministry of culture sponsored as part of its programs the task of supporting
the realization of an adopted program for each project according to needs and
suitability.
These centers are mostly examples of iconic international palaces of national and
international importance. In Egypt they are protected by law 144 year 2006 not to be
demolished or renovated or touched without the permission of civil authorities.
They are not permitted to change in facades and interiors by an intruding unspecialized
architects, artists or interior decorators. Any addition should be an appropriate
harmonizing one to the existing style and taste.
They are all expressive of the taste of their important owners.
These are art collectors (M.M. Khalil &wife) poets, (Ahmed Shawky),writers (Taha
Hussein) Royal family (Princess Fatima Haidar ),Prince Amr Ibrahim and several others.
They were renovated to be mostly personal or museums or public specialized Islamic,
pottery or jewelery. Other probable reuse possibilities are city and country hotels and
residences.
These renovations if done as personal museums should be carrying the spirit and taste
of its owners, something that should be preserved and highlighted.
Renovation &reuse should start by inspecting the existing structural, architectural,
mechanical &electrical features. These have to be uplifted as regards performance and
finishing .Situations of the building might require replacement of old structural steel or
concrete beams.
