THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF EGYPTIAN CIVILIZATION
“NMEC”
Architect: al Ghazaly Kesseiba
Location: forest Islamic Cairo
The final design of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization project was made by
Consultant at Ghazaly Kesseiba and was selected through an international architecture
competition. His design inspires flexibility and links the main reception to the galleries
through six large hallways, in addition to the main exhibition hall and the reception area
that will be in a separate building.
Initially, the project was planned to be situated in the old location of the Cairo Opera
House, however, the final location is one of the most significant archaeological sites
that can be traced back to the beginning of Egyptian history, as it is part of the first
Islamic capital.
“Though the museum was scheduled to open in 2011, work was interrupted due to the
January 25 Revolution”, Dr. Fawzy added. “The opening of the museum depended on
financial support, noting that the total cost reached one billion and a half Egyptian
pounds, of which 52% were funded by the Ministry of Antiquities and the remaining
48% by the committee for the rescue of Nubia funded by UNESCO”.
Despite the fact that the construction and furnishing phases are finished, the Committee
assigned to collect and record materials from museums all over the country has not yet
completed its task.
