There are indeed many examples of countries that have transferred their Capital city,
such as India and Brazil. In addition to Iran which had decided to transfer its capital two
years ago.
THE KEY QUESTION NOW IS WHY DO WE NEED A NEW CAPITAL?
The answer to the question will be the benchmark that will evaluate the current proposal
for the New Capital. Let us first admit that the capital city should be related to the
whole country not only to Cairo. So when we propose a new capital, our studies should
be directed to Egypt as a whole not only to Cairo. For decades we have Limited the
country in the city of Cairo, a mistake that costs us a lot everyday
Thus, we need a new capital in a serious step toward amending the negative
consequences accumulated through different eras. As we need the new capital to
establish new development horizons in Egypt based on decentralization, and to create a
new central hub in the country in the coming period
Does the proposed new capitol- in terms of objectives, location and time plans –
achieve the target?
Or does the proposal still adopt the same approaches adopted through the last
years and the different growth stages of Cairo?
Does the new proposal encompass Egypt’s one million square kilometers or still
limits Egypt in Cairo?
I recall here parts of the housing minister’s speech in the Egyptian Economic
Development Conference (EEOC) as he said: “planning of the new capital was achieved
in a scientific way according that the estimated population of Cairo will
double in the coming 40 years”.
