As a fresh graduate, I saw myself as a young heroic soldier who wanted to
put all his efforts in helping to rebuild a country from scratch….
Injected with overwhelming dreams and ideas I strutted down the path of a
courageous pioneer … and ended up designing my dreams on paper ….
After the revolution in 2011, the gates for a fundamental change had
opened once again and I was gripped by those intense dreams that sprung
from my youthful idealism, hoping to participate in rebuilding our nation
beyond the usual construction site of a project. But this time around, I had
gathered experience and a clear vision which tamed and directed my
idealistic dreams I secretly still carried inside my heart.
To identify the lingering ailments of our nation and begin to rebuilt is a huge
challenge, as it required a very honest stance and assessment of the status
quo .
Today, we live in a city full of contradictions and extremes which are
expressed in many layers of the society and culture .
Cairo contradicts itself from street to street, offering the curious eye many
parallel societies and life styles. That said, we are living in it and make a
living out of it .
Our Cairo, the impossibility of existence, throbbingWith life during every
second of the day and night, where 40% of the city’s area is composed of
ASHWA’IYAT (literalIy haphazard things), informal housing … slums
without water and electricity which live intimately next to the grand
mansions in adjacent posh neighborhoods. These are filled with expensive
hotels, where one night’s stay exceeds the monthly income of a large
portion of Cairo’s citizens.
