بينما كانت أسرة ديفارج تشق سبيل عودتها خلال الوحل الأسود بالشوارع، كانت المدام تقول لزوجها: “ماذا قال لك جاك الشرطي؟”. 
“لم يقل إلا أقل القليل، ولكنه قال إن هناك جاسوسًا جديدًا سيأتي إلى الجزء الذي نقيم به من المدينة”. 
“آه، حسنا من الضروري أن نضعه على القائمة. ما اسمه؟”. “جون بارساد. إنه إنجليزي” “حسن. هل هناك أي شيء معروف عن هيئته؟”. 
“عمره في حوالي الأربعين؛ متوسط الطول، أسود الشعر؛ وجهه نحيل وطويل؛ وأنفه مائل لليسار”.
As the Defarges were making their way through the black mud of the streets on their return, Madame said to her husband, “What did Jacques of the police tell you?” 
“Very little tonight. But he said that there is a new spy coming to our part of the city.” 
“Oh, well! It is necessary to put him on the list. What is his name?” 
John Barsad. He is English.”
“Good. Is anything known of his appearance?” 
“Age about forty years; average height, black hair, face thin and long; nose bent to the left.”
