قصة مدينتين – الفصل 2 صانع الاحذية – ص5

قال ديفارج: “هذا صحيح، ولأسباب عديدة سيكون من الأنسب للسيد مانيت أن يغادر فرنسا. هيا، هل أستأجر عربة بأحصنة؟”.
قال السيد لوري: هذه مهمة عملية، وأي مهام ينبغي القيام بها فهي من شأني أنا”.
قالت لوسى: “إذن أرجو أن تركانا هنا، أتريان كم صار هادئًا. أغلقا الباب أمان تام 
معه.” 
ذهب الرجلان من أجل إعداد الترتيبات اللازمة أبيها. وعندما غادرًا، جلست الأبنة وراحت ترنو إلى أبيها. تكاثفت الظلمة تدريجيًا، ورقد هو ساكنًا حتى أشرق ضوء النهار وتخلل بين شقوق الباب. لقد آن أوان الرحيل.
وكحال أي شخص اعتاد لوقت طويل الإذعان للأوامر، فقد أكل وشرب ما قدموه له، وارتدى الثياب التي أحضرت من أجله، ثم مضى معهم وتأبطت لوسي ذراعه. تناول هو يدها بكلتا يديه، وأبقاها هكذا. وشرعا ينزلان الدرج. 
لم يكن هناك أي زحام بالقرب من المتجر فيراهم الناس. لم يكن هناك سوى مدام ديفارج، التي كانت تجلس عند عضادة الباب وهي تحيك بالإبر، ولم يبد عليها أنها تلاحظ أي شيء.
“It is true,” Defarge. “And for many reasons Monsieur Manette would be better out of France. Say, shall I hire a carriage and horses?” 
“That is business,” said Mr Lorry. “And if business is to be done, I am the man to do it.” 
“Then please leave us here,” Lucie. “You see how quiet he has become. Lock the door when you go out. Leave us together. Do not be afraid. He is quite safe with me, and I am quite safe with him.” 
The two men went away to make arrangements for the journey. When they had gone, the daughter sat and watched her father. The darkness deepened and deepened. He lay quiet until a light shone through the cracks in the door. It was time to leave. 
As one long used to being given orders, he ate and drank what they gave him, put on the clothes they had brought for him, and went with them. Lucie put her arm through his. He took her hand in both of his own and kept it there. They began to go down the stairs. 
There was no crowd near’ the wine shop to see them go. Only one person was to be seen, and that was Madame Defarge; who leaned against the doorpost, knitting, and seemed to notice nothing.
