الخطاب، وتمنت ألا تصدق تماماً كل ما في هذا الخطاب من إيضاحات وتفسيرات، وقالت بينها وبين نفسها مراراً: “قد يكون هذا كله غير صحيح؟ فهذا مستحيل”. وحين قرأت الخطاب كله، طرحته جانباً، وعاهدت نفسها ألا تطلع عليه ثانية.
ولكنها عجزت عن ذلك. ففي خلال نصف دقيقة أعادت فتح الخطاب، وأخذت تقرأ كل التفاصيل الخاصة بالسيد ويكهام مراراً بكل دقة وانتباه أدركت إليزابيث أن من بين الشخصين المعنيين، كان أحدهما خالياً من أي لوم، بينما كان الآخر تافهاً ولا يستحق الاهتمام. ولكن كيف لها أن تحدد؟ وحاولت أن تتذكر مثالاً يدلل على طيبة وصلاح السيد ويكهام، ولكنها لم تجد. لقد سرها مظهره ونبرة صوته وسلوكه، ولكنها لا تدري أي شيء عن شخصيته. وقصة نواياه تجاه الآنسة دارسي لها ما يؤيدها إلى حد ما من حديث الكولونيل فيتزويليام معها صباح أمس الأول، ووفقاً لما قاله دارسي، فإن الكولونيل فيتزويليام سيؤيد كل تفاصيل هذه القصة.
