كبرياء وهوى – الفصل 19 آل بنجلي- ص3

السيدة جاردنر وابنة الأخت كانتا تعلمان مشكلتها، وأشفقنا عليها. 

حيت السيدة جاردنر والآنسة بنجلي بعضهما البعض بقليل من الكلمات، وتلا جلوسهن جميعاً صمت مربك لم يكسره سوى رفيقة الآنسة دارسي، وهي سيدة حسنة الخلق، حيث دخلت في محادثة مع السيدة جاردنر، وأعانتها إليزابيث في ذلك. وبدت الأنسة دارسي وكأنها تنتظر التشجيع الكافي من أي منهن لكي تنضم إلى المحادثة. 
وسرعان ما أدركت إليزابيث أن الآنسة ينجلي تراقبها بدقة، وبعد ربع ساعة، سألتها الآنسة بنجلي بيرود عن صحة أسرتها. وأجابتها إليزابيث بنفس البرود. 
بعدها دخل بعض الخدم، حاملين اللحم البارد، والكعك، ومجموعة متنوعة من أشهى فواكه الموسم، وبعدها بفترة قصيرة، ظهر السيد دارسي الذي كان يصطاد مع السيد جاردنر. 
قررت إليزابيث أن تبدو في غاية الهدوء والاسترخاء، وخاصة حين أدركت أن شكوك المجموعة كلها تدفعهم إلى الملاحظة الدقيقة لكل كلمة وكل تعبير، وكل حركة تصدر عن السيد دارسي أو عنها. ولم تبد تلك الشكوك واضحة على أي وجه أكثر من وجه الآنسة بنجلي، رغم كل الابتسامات التي تعتلي وجهها حين تتحدث إلى أي منهما؛ ولكن الغيرة لم تدفعها بعد إلى فقدان الأمل، وما زالت تخطط للفوز بالسيد دارسي. ولكن بعد ذلك بقليل، وفي لحظة غضب طائشة، قالت في أدب امتزج بالازدراء: 
“أعتقد يا آنسة ليزي أن الكتيبة قد غادرت ميريتون. لابد أن ذلك كان خسارة كبيرة لأسرتك”. 
أجابت إليزابيث بهدوء، وبينما كانت تتحدث، لاحظت امتقاع وجه السيد دارسي، واضطراب أخته، فأحست الآنسة بنجلي بعض الشيء بالألم 
Mrs Hurst and Miss Bingley greeted them in few words, and when they were seated an awkward pause followed. It was broken by Miss Darcy’s companion, a woman of good breeding, who carried on a conversation with Mrs Gardiner with some help from Elizabeth. Miss Darcy looked as if she wished for courage enough to join in. 
Elizabeth soon saw that she was closely watched by Miss Bingley. After a quarter of an hour, Miss Bingley inquired coldly after the health of her family, and Elizabeth replied just as coldly. 
Some servants then entered with cold meat, cake, and a variety of all the finest fruits in season, and soon after that Mr Darcy, who had been fishing with Mr Gardiner, made his appearance. 
Elizabeth decided to appear perfectly calm and relaxed, especially when she realized that the suspicions of the whole party were causing close observation of every word, expression and movement from Darcy or herself. In no face was this so clearly expressed as in Miss Bingley’s, in spite of the smiles that spread over it when she addressed one of them. Jealousy had not yet made her give up hope, and she still planned to win Mr Darcy. But a little later, in an unwise moment of anger, she said with scornful politeness: 
“I believe, Miss Eliza, that the regiment has left Meryton. They must be a great loss to your family.” 
Elizabeth answered calmly, and while she spoke, she noticed that the colour in Darcy’s face had deepened, and that his sister was full of confusion. Miss Bingley little knew
