وفى ميريتون وافقت المجموعة على قبول دعوة الخالة على العشاء ولعب الورق. فأخذت العربة السيد كولينز وبنات عمه الخمس في ساعة مناسبة إلى البلدة، وسعدت الفتيات كثيراً عند دخولهن إلى حجرة الجلوس حين سمعن أن السيد ويكهام قبل دعوة من زوج خالتهن للحضور، وكان متواجداً في المنزل عند حضورهن.

وحين أعلنت هذه المعلومة. وأخذ كل الأفراد مقاعدهم، أطلق السيد كولينز لنفسه العنان لكي يجول بنظره في أرجاء المكان ويتحدث إلى الحضور، أما الفتيات، فقد رأين أن وقت الانتظار قد طال، ولكنة انقضى على أية حال. وانضم السادة إليهم، وبينما كان السيد ويكهام يجول في الحجرة. شعرت إليزابيث بأنها لم تكن تفكر فيه بإعجاب متناهٍ لا مبرر له.
وكان السيد ويكهام هو الرجل المحظوظ الذي التفتت إليه أعين كل الفتيات، وكانت إليزابيث ص الفتاة المحظوظة التي تخير الجلوس بجوارها في النهاية، ووسط كل هؤلاء الرجال الرائعين، والذين كانوا محط اهتمام كل الفتيات، غرق السيد كولينز في شعور فظيع بعدم الأهمية، ولكنة كان بين الحين والآخر يجد مستمعاً جيداً له متمثلاً في السيدة فيليبس.
وكانت إليزابيث على أحبة الاستعداد للاستماع إلى حديث السيد ويكهام، ولكنهنا لم تستطع أن تأمل في أن يخبرها بما كانت ترغب في سماعة في الأساس. ألا وهو قصة معرفته بالسيد دارسى. ولكنة أشبع اهتمامها إلى أقصى حد بشكل غير متوقع، حيث بدأ السيد ويكهام في التحدث في هذا الشأن، وسأل في هدوء عن المدة التي قضاها السيد دارسى في المكان.

The gentlemen joined them, and when Mr Wickham walked into the room, Elizabeth felt that she had not been thinking of him with at aunreasonable admiration.
Mr Wickham was the happy man towards whom almost every lady’s eye was turned, and Elizabeth was the happy woman by whom he seated himself at last. With such fine men as Mr Wickham and the officers in competition for the attention of the ladies, Mr Collins seemed to sink into unimportance, but he still had from time to time a kind listener in Mrs Philips.
Elizabeth was very willing to hear Mr Wickham talk. though she could not hope to be told what she chiefly wished to hear -the history of his acquaintance with Mr Darcy. But her interest was most unexpectedly satisfied. Mr Wickham began the subject himself. He asked slowly how long Mr Darcy had been staying in the area.
