كان الخطاب طويلاً، وكان الجزء الأخير منه موجهاً إلى الفتيات. فقد كتب السيد مارش لزوجته يقول: “أبلغيهن حبي، وأخبريهن كم أفكر فيهن وأدعو لهن. لن أراهن ثانية قبل مرور عام كامل. أخبريهن بأن يستفدن بأوقاتهن، ويعملن بجد. أعرف أنهن فتيات طيبات ورقيقات، وأنهن سيعتنين بك على خير وجه ويقمن بواجباتهن. آمل أن تبذل كل واحدة من بناتي قصارى جهدها لتتغلب على ضعفها، حتى أفخر بسيداتي الصغيرات عند عودتي”.

The letter was long, and the last part of it was addressed to the girls. Mr. March wrote to his wife: “Give them my love.
Tell them how much I think of them and pray for them. It will be a whole year before I shall see them again. Tell them to make use of their time and to work hard. I know that they are good and. loving children and that they will take great care of you and do their duty. I hope that each of my daughters will do her best to fight against her own weakness, so that when I come back, I may be proud of my little women.”
