قصة مدينتين – الفصل 10 عامل تعبيد الطرق – ص5

قال جاك ثلاثة: “ونعرف أيضًا أن حراس الملك قد أحاطوا به وهاجموه”. 
قال ديفارج: “واصل حديثك”. 
“صباح يوم الاثنين، عندما استيقظت القرية، كانت هناك مشنقة خشبية بارتفاع 40 قدما في منتصف الميدان”. 
وأشار بإصبعه كما لو أنه يحدد لهم ارتفاع المشنقة. 
“توقف كل العمل في القرية: لم يخرج أحد الأبقار؛ ومضى الجميع إلى الميدان. وفي منتصف النهار دقت الطبول، وخرج من السجن، محاطًا بمجموعة من الجنود. كان مقيدًا كما كان سابقًا، ووضعت في فمه قطعة قماش لمنعه من الحديث. وهكذا، ودون كلام، تم شنقه هناك، على ارتفاع أربعين قدمًا، وترك هناك معلقًا في الميدان. كان أمرًا مرعبًا. كيف يمكن للنساء أن يقتربن من ذلك المكان؟ كيف يمكن للأطفال أن يلعبوا هناك وذلك الشيء معلق فوقهم ملقيًا عليهم بظله؟ 
أمر مريع. غادرت القرية مساء الاثنين، وبينما ابتعد إلتفت فرأيت الظل الطويل للمشنقة يمر على دار العبادة، ويمر على المنازل، بل وعلى السجن أيضًا. وقد قابلت هذا السيد النبيل كما تم إبلاغي، وبصحبته أتيت، أولًا سيرًا ثم ركوبًا على الأحصنة، طوال يوم أمس وطوال ليلة أمس. وها آنذا هنا”. 
وبعد فترة صمت طويلة، قال جاك الأول: “حسن، لقد قلت الحق وتصرفت بالصدق. هلا انتظرتنا قليلًا بالخارج؟”. 
قال عامل تعبيد الطرقات: “بالطبع”، نهض ديفارج وخرج معه إلى أعلى الدرج، ثم عاد وحده”. 
قال رقم واحد: “ما قولك يا جاك، هل نضعهم على القائمة؟”.
“And know, too” said Jacques Three, “that the King’s guards surrounded him and struck him.” 
“Go on,” said Defarge. 
“On Monday morning, when the village woke, there was a gallows 40 feet high in the middle of the square! 
He pointed with his finger as if to show the height of the gallows. 
“All work was stopped in the village: nobody took the cows out; everybody went to the square. At midday there was a sound of drums, and down from the prison he came, surrounded by a group of soldiers. He was tied up as before, and in his mouth was a Cloth to prevent him from speaking. And so, without speaking, lie was hanged there, 40 feet high, and was left there, hanging in the square. It was frightful. How could the women go near that place? How could the children play there with that thing above them throwing down its shadow? 
“It was terrible. I left the village on Monday evening, and as I left it I looked back and saw the long shadow of the gallows lying across the church, across the houses and even across the prison. I met this gentleman as I had been warned I should. With him, I came on, first walking, then riding, all yesterday and all last night. And here you see me.” 
After a long silence, the first Jacques said, “Good, you have acted and spoken truthfully. Will you wait for us a little, outside the door?” 
“Of course said the mender of roads. Defarge got up and went with him to the top of the stairs, and then returned. 
“What do you say, Jacques?” said Number One. “Shall we put them on the list?”
