For example the three water tanks, each 80 meters in diameter were dealt
with by using intricate hardscape design patterns, using plants with shallow
roots so that the weight of the top soil would not affect the tank. Since we
had a tight water budget we used arid. plants in selected zones. Lush plants
were only used in the main spine as it is oriented towards the historical
artifacts in the area: the Citadel and Umm Al Sultan Shaaban. We aimed at
creating a park that would be sustainable and is in harmony with its
surrounding environment and I believe the outcome fulfilled and surpassed
our expectations.
Q: What are the most prominent awards you won? Hassan Fathy Award for
Architecture- Gold Prize-2014, on Al- Azhar Park, Cairo, Egypt. Urban
Land Institute’s Award for Excellence- July 2009, on The American
University in Cairo, New Campus, New Cairo, Egypt. Aga Khan Award for
Architecture-1999-2001, for the Landscape Architecture design of The
Nubian Museum, Aswan, Egypt.
Q: What are the most significant challenges you faced? At the beginning
dealing with contractors, as landscape trade packages were new to Egypt,
was a huge challenge. Now the situation is different as the profession has
begun to spread across the country.
Q: You have carried out projects in Egypt and abroad, so how do you
assess landscape architecture in Egypt? It is still a growing field. It is slowly
becoming a priority to many private developers; however, it is slow in
gaining the attention of general local development and small landowners.
Q: What are the most significant plants upon which you depend in your
designs? Each design is different and various plant types are used
depending on the design, the climate, the type of soil and the water
availability.
