SMART CITIES OR STUPID RESIDENTS?
Architect: Ali Abd Al roauf
Professor of architecture criticism and construction theories.
Introduction:
Stupidity and intelligence in the first place, are human characteristics. It also can be
noticed in some animals and plants but in a less comprehensive and complex aspect than
in humans. While There was no justification for labeling inanimate objects or
machines with intelligence, until after the emergence of a research line from the most
famous of digital technologies laboratories in the world that dealing with the
concepts of artificial intelligence.1
Since these ideas crystallized in the late sixties and early seventies of the last century,
we have seen far leaps in the idea of linking between intelligence and inanimate objects
until we reached to the era of smart phones that saving the full life file of the owner.
Description cities with smart has appeared for the first time in the literature of
construction and planning at the beginning of the third millennium.
The term of smart city has appeared in 2000 and the theorists, social workers, stylists,
economists and urban planners participated in its drafting for the sake of reaching
changes based on the new technologies used in such cities.
The idea of the smart city springs from exploiting successive digital technologies to
improve economic and social conditions of the city.
However, the examiner sees that a critical vision of the idea of smart cities should be
provided to assess the actual impact on the quality of life, especially social
humanitarian aspect. And it is allowed to us in the Middle East to think about the
feasibility of applying this thesis, especially after the idea of turning the Arab and Gulf
cities to smart cities has become a desirable goal without an integrated critical vision.
