انقبض قلب دارني من هذا الخطاب. كان قد أخبر جابيل أن يبذل ما بوسعه من أجل مصلحة الناس وأن يمنحهم القليل المتبقي مما يمكن منحه. والآن فإن خادمه المخلص سجين وكل جريرته أنه نفذ أوامره. 
بدا جليًا تمامًا بالنسبة لدارني أنه يتوجب عليه السفر إلى باريس لم ير أي خطورة في ذلك، فقد رأى أن شعب فرنسا سوف يشعر بالامتنان لما قام به، حتى وإن لم يقم به على خير وجه. لعله يكون قادرًا على إنقاذ خادمه القديم من الموت الذي بات الآن مؤكدا ووشيكًا. 
بينما كان يسير هنا وهناك، مفكرا فيما يتوجب عليه القيام به، قرر أنه يجب ألا تعرف لوسى ولا أبوها بأمر ذهابه إلى أن يكون قد سافر بالفعل. سيكون الأفضل ألا يعلن نواياه من أجل حماية الآخرين من القلق والتوتر. وبهذه الأفكار التي تملأ رأسه عاد ليودع السيد لوري. 
قال: “لقد تسلمت الخطاب. وليس هناك رد مكتوب، ولكن لعلك تستطيع نقل رسالة شفوية؟”. 
قال السيد لوري: “بكل تأكيد”.
“إنها موجهة لسجين في سجن آبای يدعى جابيل”.
“جابيل”.
“والرسالة هي “لقد تلقى رسالتك وسوف يأني”.
“هل هناك وقت محدد؟”.
“سيشرع في رحلته مساء الغد”. 
قال السيد لوري: “حسن للغاية، والآن علىَّ أن أذهب. أبلغ حبي للوسي، وأيضًا للوسي الصغيرة، واعتن بهم جيدًا لحين عودتي”. 
هز تشارلز رأسه وابتسم في ريبة بينما كانت عربته تبتعد.

It seemed quite clear to Darnay that he must go to Paris. He saw no danger. He thought the people of France would be grateful for what he had done, even though it had been done imperfectly. Perhaps he would be able to save his old servant from the death that now seemed certain. 
As he walked up and down, thinking what ought to be done, he decided that neither Lucie nor her father must know that he was going until after he had actually gone. It would be best to keep his intentions to himself in order to protect others from anxiety, if possible. With these thoughts in his mind he returned to say goodbye to Mr Lorry. 
“I have delivered the letter,” said. “There is no written answer, but perhaps you will take a spoken one?” 
“Certainly,” said Mr Lorry.
“It is to a prisoner in the Abbaye; his name is Gabelle.”
“Gabelle.”
“The message is, “He has received the letter and will come.”
“Is any time mentioned?”
“He will start on his journey tomorrow night.” 
“Very well,” said Mr Lorry. “And now I must go. Give my love to Lucie, and to little Lucie, and take care of them until I come back. 
Charles Darnay shook his head and smiled doubtfully as the carriage moved away. 
That night – it was the fourteenth of August — he sat up late and wrote two letters, to be delivered after he had gone,
