قصة مدينتين – الفصل 16 دارني يعود إلى فرنسا – ص6

قال دارني متطلعًا إليه بدهشة: “نعم”.
“اسمي دیفارج وكنت أدير متجرًا في سان أنكون. لعلك سمعت بي”.
“نعم. لقد أتت زوجتي إلى متجرك بحثًا عن أبيها”.
“وما الذي أعادك إلى فرنسا؟”.
“لقد سمعتني أذكر السبب من دقيقة. ألا تصدق أنها الحقيقة؟”.
قال ديفارج: “حقيقة ليست في صالحك”. 
“أنت على حق. أشعر بالضياع هنا. كل شيء غير متوقع، مختلف تمامًا، وفيه ظلم كبير. أشعر بضياع تام. هل ستفعل شيئًا من أجلي؟”. 
“لا شيء”. 
“في السجن الذي تقودونني إليه، ألن يكون بوسعي أن أرسل أي رسالة إلى العالم الخارجي؟ هل سيحكم علىَّ دون أية وسائل تتاح لي للدفاع عن نفسي؟”. 
“سوف ترى. ولكن افترض أن يحدث هذا – قبل الآن كان الآخرون يسجنون في سجون أسوأ كثيرًا”. 
“من الأهمية القصوى بالنسبة لي أن يتاح لي إرسال رسالة للسيد لوري في بنك تيلسون والموجود حاليًا في باريس. هلا أسديتني هذا المعروف؟ ما عليك إلا إخبار السيد لوري بأنه قد ألقى بي في سجن لافورس”. 
“لن أسديك أي معروف. واجبي الوحيد هو تجاه بلادي وشعبي. إنني عدوك. ولن أفعل أي شيء لمساعدتك”. 
شعر دارني بأنه من غير المجدي أن يكرر توسله، فساروا في صمت. لم يثر مرورهم في الشوارع انتباه أحد. شخص حسن الثياب يقتاد إلى السجن صار منظرًا معتادًا تمامًا كما يتوجه العامل إلى مصنعه. حتی الأطفال لم يكادوا يلتفتون نحوهم. أدار قليل من الناس رؤوسهم نحوهم
Antoine. Perhaps you have heard of me?” 
“Yes. My wife came to your house to reclaim her father.”
“And what has brought you back to France?” 
“You heard me say the reason a minute ago. Don’t you believe that it is the truth?” 
“A bad truth for you” said Defarge. – 
“You’re right. I feel lost here. All is so unexpected, so changed, so unfair. I feel completely lost. Will you do something for me?” 
“Nothing.” 
“In the prison to which you are taking me, shall I not be able to get any message to the outside world? Shall I be judged without any means of defending myself?” 
“You will see. But suppose you are — other people have been sent to worse prisons before now.” 
“It is of the greatest importance to me that I should be able to send a message to Mr Lorry of Tellson’s Bank who is now in Paris. Will you please do this for me? Just tell Mr Lorry that I have been thrown into the prison of La Force.” 
“I will do nothing for you. My duty is to my country and my people. I am your enemy. I will do nothing to help you.” 
Darnay felt that it was hopeless to ask again and they walked on in silence. Their passing through the streets attracted no attention. A well-dressed person going to prison had become as common a sight as a worker going to his work. Even the children hardly noticed them. A few people turned their heads to look, and a few shouted insults at him for being an aristocrat, but otherwise no notice was taken. At a street corner a man was addressing a small crowd and Darnay
