لم تريا السيدين ثانية حتى يوم الثلاثاء، حيث كان هناك حفل كبير في لونجبورن، وبمجرد أن دخلا إلى الحجرة، أخذت إليزابيث تراقب السيد بنجلي في لهفة لترى ما إن كان سيتخذ نفس المقعد الذي اعتاده في كل الحفلات السابقة بجوار أختها، أما أمها الحريصة، فقد ظلت الفكرة نفسها بذهنها، ومن ثم لم تدعه إلى الجلوس إلى جوارها. وبدا أنه سيتوقف، ولكن جين أخذت تجول بعينها في المكان وتبتسم. وحينئذ تم الاختيار وجلس إلى جوارها.
أما إليزابيث، فأخذت تنظر ناحية صديقه، وبداخلها شعور بالانتصار. تحمل دارسي نظراتها، وكانت إليزابيث تظن أن بنجلي قد تلقى إذنًا من دارسي بأن ينعم بالسعادة، لولا أنها رأت بنجلي وهو ينظر إلى دارسي وقد ارتسم القلق على وجهه.
أوضح سلوك بنجلي تجاه أختها أثناء العشاء مدى إعجابه بها، والذي اعتقدت معه إليزابيث أن سعادة جين وسعادته وشيكة التحقق، لو تُرِك وشأنه.
كان السيد دارسي يجلس بجوار أمها، وكانت تعلم أن هذا الموقف لن يُسعد كليهما إلى حد بعيد. ولم يمكنها سماع ما دار بينهما من حديث، ولكنها تمكنت من إدراك مدى الرسمية والفتور الذي اتسم كل منهما به تجاه الآخر كلما دار بينهما حديث.
كم كانت تأمل أن تجمعها أي فرصة في تلك الليلة بالسيد دارسي، فقد كانت تشعر بالقلق وعدم الارتياح، وكانت الفترة التي قضتها الأسرة في غرفة الجلوس قبل أن يأتي السادة مملة وكئيبة.

As the two men entered the dining room, Elizabeth eagerly watched to see whether Bingley would take the place which, at all their former parties, had belonged to him, by her sister. Elizabeth, with a feeling of victory, looked towards his friend. He bore it well, and she would have imagined that Bingley had received his permission to be happy, if she had not seen his eyes turned towards Mr Darcy with an expression of anxiety.
His behaviour towards her sister during dinner showed such admiration that Elizabeth believed that, if left completely to himself, Jane’s happiness, and his own, would be speedily gained.
Mr Darcy was on one side of her mother. She knew how little such a situation could give pleasure to either. She was not near enough to hear any of their conversation, but she could see how rarely they spoke to each other, and how formal and cold their manner was whenever they did.
She hoped that the evening would provide some opportunity of bringing herself and Mr Darcy together. Anxious and uncomfortable, the period which passed in the sitting room before the gentlemen came in was tiring and dull.
