وعلى الفور غادرت الفتاتان المنزل مرة أخرى، وهرولتا عبر الحشائش متتبعتين أباهما. وسرعان ما أبطأت جين- التي لم تكن تجري بنفس سرعة وخفة إليزابيث- من سرعتها، بينما تمكنت إليزابيث من الوصول إلى أبيها لاهثة، وصاحت في لهفة:
“أوه، يا أبي! ما الأخبار! أهي أخبار جيدة أم سيئة؟”.
فقال وهو يُخرج الخطاب من جيبه: “وما الجيد الذي يمكننا أن نتوقعه، ولكن ربما تودين قراءة الخطاب”.
التقطت إليزابيث الخطاب من يده في نفاد صبر وفي هذه اللحظة انضمت إليهما جين
قال الأب: “اقرئيه بصوت مرتفع”.
